What you need to know about qualified charitable distributions
- You must be 70 ½ years or older at the time of the gift.
- Your gift must go from your IRA directly to Mass General Brigham.
- To complete a QCD, contact your administrator for the necessary forms and procedures.
- A gift cannot exceed $111,000 per taxpayer in 2026. Married couples may give up to $222,000 to all organizations.
- Gifts must be made by December 31 to take advantage this tax year.
- If you are 73 or older, the transfer of funds counts towards your annual required minimum distribution (RMD) from your QCD.
How it works
- Inform the institution holding your IRA that you want to make a QCD to Mass General Brigham.
- Complete the necessary paperwork to request the QCD.
- Notify Mass General Brigham and let us know how you want your gift to be used.
The benefits of a qualified charitable distribution
- If you don’t itemize, a QCD offers all the benefits of an income tax charitable deduction. Your gift to Mass General Brigham is tax-free.
- You may elect to use up to $55,000 of your QCD to establish a charitable gift annuity. Learn more.
- Gifts can satisfy your RMD (if you are 73 or older and required to take withdrawals from your IRA) without increasing your income taxes.
- There is no charitable deduction, but you will not pay taxes on your QCD withdrawal when it’s gifted to Mass General Brigham.
- You may direct your gift to a hospital program or area of your choice or pay off a pledge commitment.
- You’ll create an immediate impact on the lives of patients and their families.

Frequently asked questions
Does it matter which account I use?
Yes. QCD gifts may only come from your traditional IRA. A 401(k), 403(b), SEP IRA, or other type of retirement account does not qualify.
Can I initiate my QCD if I'm still 70?
Not yet. In the year you turn 70 ½, you can only make a QCD on or after the date you reach age 70 ½. It is not sufficient that you will turn 70 ½ later in the year.
Can my QCD be payment toward a pledge?
Yes. You may use up to $111,000 a year toward a pledge at Mass General Brigham.
Can my QCD pay for an upcoming event?
No. The gift must generate a 100% deduction equal to the rollover. That means you may not receive any “quid pro quo” benefits for the donation, such as event tickets or sponsorships.
