Giving glioblastoma patients a shot for life

Inspired by his mother’s experience at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, Mike Slonina organized a 24-hour basketball tournament in 2011 to raise funds for revolutionary cancer research. Over the years, A Shot For Life has grown into an inspiring force in sports-based fundraising.

Frequently asked questions

Who can help me start my fundraiser?
Mass General Brigham's experienced Development Office can guide you through the process. To get in touch with one of our community fundraising experts, please contact fundraise@mgb.org.
Can you provide letters and receipts?

Yes. The Mass General Brigham Development Office can provide several letters. However, please note that we can’t provide tax receipts for any gifts or contributions that are not received by or made payable directly to Mass General Brigham. Documents that we can provide are as follows:

  • Mass General Brigham community fundraising confirmation letters to be used to validate the authenticity of your fundraiser and its organizers
  • Acknowledgement letters and tax receipts for contributions made payable directly to Mass General Brigham and delivered to the Development Office

We encourage you to send your own personal thank you letters to thank your network for their support.

Can you provide a list of potential supporters?
No. We cannot provide mailing lists of donors, physicians, staff, or vendors, as it is our policy to keep records confidential.
Can you solicit sponsors or celebrities for me?
No. Mass General Brigham cannot solicit corporate sponsors or celebrity appearances for your fundraiser.
Who will help run my fundraiser?
While our staff can provide guidance and resources, Mass General Brigham relies on our community fundraising organizers to plan and run their fundraisers. We recommend that you form a committee of friends, family, and others who are excited about your cause. They can play an important role in supporting your fundraiser and your planning efforts.
Can I raise money for medical bills?
No. While it’s a thoughtful gesture, Mass General Brigham does not consider fundraising for an individual’s medical bills to be philanthropy, and our Development Office cannot support these efforts.
Can I have a raffle at my fundraiser?
Yes. Raffles and auctions can be a great way to raise money. Massachusetts has strict regulations governing raffles and gaming events carried out for charitable purposes. Our team can provide more information about rules for raffles and other games of chance in Massachusetts.
Can I use Mass General Brigham’s tax-exempt number?
No. Mass General Brigham cannot provide our tax-exempt number to event organizers for purchases related to their event. However, if a business donates to the event and would like the tax-exempt number for tax purposes or to verify Mass General Brigham’s tax status, we can provide the tax identification number to that business upon request.
Who will pay my event expenses?
Event organizers are responsible for covering all expenses for their event and will not be reimbursed. Your event costs may be deducted from the funds raised before you send the donation to Mass General Brigham.
Can proceeds support another organization?
Yes. Please be sure to inform our community fundraising team of this intention when you start fundraising. If your event has more than one beneficiary, clearly state the percentage of the proceeds that will benefit Mass General Brigham on all advertising, promotional, and print materials.
How should I submit gifts?

The best, fastest, most secure way for Mass General Brigham to collect your event’s donations is through your personal fundraising page. If you receive donations in other forms, please handle them as follows:

  • For checks: Have all checks made payable to Mass General Brigham and ensure they reference your fundraiser name on the memo line. Please mail them to the Mass General Brigham Development Office.
  • For cash: Please deliver cash to the Development Office with a note indicating the amount included and the name of your fundraiser.
What do I do with money collected?

Following your fundraiser, please mail or hand-deliver all net proceeds made payable to Mass General Brigham to:
