Donor-advised funds

Donor-advised funds, or DAFs, act like philanthropic savings accounts and are becoming a popular way to make a charitable gift. You get tax benefits and flexibility to recommend gift amount and frequency to your favorite nonprofits — like Mass General Brigham.

Why a DAF?

There are several reasons a DAF could be a worthwhile option for your charitable giving.

  1. Simplicity: The DAF sponsor handles all record keeping, disbursements, and tax receipts, while you avoid the cost and complexities of managing a private foundation. And there are no transaction fees, meaning 100% of your gift goes to Mass General Brigham.
  2. Flexibility: The timing of your tax deduction can be separate from your charitable decision making.
  3. Benefits: Contributions are tax deductible and your investments in a DAF can appreciate tax-free. You receive an immediate income tax deduction in the year you contribute to your DAF. Additionally, your DAF will not be subject to estate taxes.
  4. Legacy: To continue your support after your lifetime, you can name Mass General Brigham as a beneficiary to receive all or a portion of your DAF.

"Our donor-advised fund is a great mechanism that allows us to contribute to the organizations that mean a lot to our family."

What is a designation?
A gift designation is your specification of how we use your donation. You can restrict your giving to a specific purpose, like cancer care or Alzheimer’s disease research. Or, you can make an unrestricted gift to Mass General Brigham, which gives us the flexibility to direct your donation to the areas of greatest need and opportunity in support of our mission.
