Rebecca Heist, MD, MPH, the Britain W. Nicholson, MD, Endowed Cancer Chair, is a distinguished leader in medical oncology and clinical cancer research at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute.

Recruitment and retention

The Cancer Institute’s greatest strength is our people — the scientists and physicians whose ideas and expertise drive progress in cancer research and care. Philanthropy helps us recruit and retain exceptional physician-scientists, establish endowed chairs for visionary cancer researchers and clinicians, and invest in transformative scholars who represent the next generation of cancer leaders.

Translational and clinical research

At the Cancer Institute, discoveries move seamlessly from the lab to the clinic. Faculty at the Krantz Family Center for Cancer Research are uncovering biological drivers of cancer, while physician-scientists lead novel studies and early-phase clinical trials at the Henri and Belinda Termeer Center for Targeted Therapies. Philanthropy bridges the gap between early-stage science and clinical care.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning

We're using AI and machine learning to find cancer earlier, tailor each patient’s treatment, and improve outcomes. With support from philanthropy, we’re expanding digital pathology, enhancing how we analyze data, and building real-time tools that help care teams detect patterns, predict how cancer will progress, and choose the best treatment for each patient.

Early detection

Our Early Detection and Diagnostics (EDDx) Program brings clinicians and researchers together to identify cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages. Philanthropy helps the EDDx team reach patients across the region and bring cutting-edge research directly into clinical care through personalized risk assessments, screening, and emerging diagnostic tools.

Whole-person cancer care

Cancer care extends beyond treating the disease itself. Our multidisciplinary teams support patients and families throughout treatment and recovery by addressing their physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs while researching new models of care that improve quality of life and outcomes. Philanthropy helps expand these programs so more patients can benefit from truly whole-person cancer care.

Cell therapy

Support from our donor community leads to the development and delivery of next-generation cellular therapies, including CAR T and other engineered immune cell approaches, to bring lifesaving treatments to more patients.
